In January of 2005, I had a brain aneurysm burst while I was out running. In spite of the fact that I ended up in intensive care for a couple of weeks, I was nonetheless very fortunate. It didn't kill me, and it didn't leave me with any brain damage. It did, however, leave me with debilitating pain for several months that forced me to quit one of my jobs and reduce my class load.
The whole thing was so scary. Doctors couldn't tell me how long I would have to live with the awful headaches. I didn't know if I would ever go back to normal.
One day, a box showed up on my doorstep. I opened it up to find a Darth Tater. Darth Tater! I also got a much needed gift card to the local hippy grocery store.
Darth Tater still has pride of place in my living room. It always reminds me that, as much wrangling as we do with each other, we really are a community. I can't even begin to tell you how much it meant to me to have a random gift show up on my doorstep at a time when I felt really low.
