In late 2005, I experienced a series of Unfortunate Events, including the loss of my first and oldest kitty pal Sam-o-rama to stomach cancer; the loss of one of Cleo's kittens, Eisenhower "Li'l Pete" Dinkus, to a blood clot; and the loss of my 1992 Honda Civic hatchback with 268,000 miles on it to an unexpected hood flying up and smashing in the windshield while on interstate 74. Within a week or so, my grandpa's pup Pooch, also a part of the family, died as well. One after the other, these events took their toll, both financial and emotional. It was a pretty bad time and having to buy a new (to me) car out of the blue after just spending all of my available cash on vet care.. well let's put it this way, I realized how thin my financial cushion was after all.
I didn't think to save any of the original posts from that time, but I can tell you, I've always been grateful for the BBS community for their wealth of knowledge about seemingly every topic under the sun, their practical advice, their emotional support when I've been down in the dumps, the Christmas card exchanges, CD exchanges, and everything else truly good and wonderful about being part of it. But the Sekret Room thing, that was something else altogether. While I still worry that someone else may have been more needy than I, it was absolutely staggering when I was told to check my PayPal account. STAGGERING. Not only did the gift provide immediate stress relief from some of my financial worries, it was one of the most kind and unexpected things that has ever happened to me. It made me feel loved, cared for, truly a member of something special, and though I cried like a baby, it was good crying.
I'll never forget it. Thank you all for being there for me when I needed it. You are true friends.
